Firefighters battle large blaze at Scots industrial estate as huge smoke plume seen in area

Smoke was seen billowing across a Scots town this morning as a large fire took hold at an industrial estate,

Emergency services raced to the scene at Lenziemill Industrial Estate in Cumbernauld after receiving reports of a blaze.

Two fire appliances were called out to help extinguish the flames at about 8.10am.

Thick black smoke could be seen from across the town as firefighters battled the well developed fire.

It is understood that scaffolding at one of the industrial units had went alight.

Fire crews spent about an hour extinguishing the flames, with people urged to avoid the Telford Place area.

No casualties have been reported.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "We received an initial call at 8.10am and mobilised two fire appliances to the scene.

"It was scaffolding that was alight and there were no casualties reported.

"Crews used two main jets, a hose reel jet and two breathing apparatuses.

"The stop message came in at 9.03am and we are now away from the scene."

Local people reported seeing the black smoke on social media.

One resident wrote: "Saw the black smoke from my window. Hope no one is injured."

While another added: "Could see it from my work in Lenziemill looked bad."

A final person commented: "I thought I saw smoke in the air earlier."
