Firefighters battle Hunslet scrap yard blaze for more than 12 hours

Firefighters battled a blaze at a Leeds scrap yard for more than 12 hours, with ten fire engines and specialist units called to the scene.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service was called at around 7pm on April 23 to Pepper Road in Hunslet after reports of a fire at a commercial premises.

Thick plumes of smoke could be seen above the scrapyard and as far away as Bradford.

Nearby residents were asked to keep their windows and doors shut overnight and people were advised against travelling through the area.

No one was evacuated.

Shortly before 11pm, fire crews managed to contain the fire but stayed overnight to dampen down the site.

They left at around 8am this morning, April 24.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "Thanks to everyone for your patience and support during this incident.

"Crews remained on scene damping down overnight and have now left the scene."

Crews from Hunslet, Leeds, Morley, Normanton, Rothwell, Moortown, Killingbeck, Stanningley, Skelmanthorpe, Mirfield, Cookridge and Ossett were all in attendance.
