Koko nightclub fire: Flames rip through iconic Camden music venue

Firefighters are battling a huge fire ripping through London's iconic Koko nightclub.

Images from scene show the roof of the venue in Camden almost completely engulfed in flames.

The club has been closed for around a year and was due to open this year after a £40 million refurbishment.

A spokesman for London Fire Brigade said: "We were called at 8.56 to a fire at a Camden nightclub under refurbishment. Thirty per cent of the roof is alight.

"Firefighters are working hard to save the rest of the building. Please avoid the area if possible."

Sixty firefighters and six fire engines were sent to battle the blaze.

Shops and businesses nearby were also evacuated.

Many people took to social media to share their devastation at the damage caused to the iconic venue.

One said: "Super-sad seeing Camden’s KOKO in flames. That place holds so many memories. Thankfully mid-refurb so assuming empty, but still hard to see"

Councillor for Kentish Town Georgia Gould said: "Heartbreaking watching the Camden Palace / Koko up in flames this evening, a building that holds so many memories and means so much to us in Camden.

"Incredible how quickly @LondonFire got under control, we owe them so much for their swift and courageous response."

Local councillor Oliver Cooper tweeted: "There’s a fire at legendary music venue Koko in Camden Town, with smoke billowing out from inside.

"Three fire engines and dozens of firefighters currently on site."

He later added: "The fire at Koko in Camden Town is under control and now being pushed back. Hugely grateful to @LondonFire for their swift response, but devastated by the potential loss of such a huge part of Camden’s culture."
