Bristol fire: Firefighters battle huge blaze in derelict hotel in city centre

Firefighters are tackling a huge blaze is ripping through a derelict Bristol hotel with thick white plumes of smoke and bright orange flames seen rising into the sky.

Emergency services rushed to the Grosvenor Hotel in Victoria Street, opposite Temple Meads station, just before 10pm on Tuesday night.

People have shared dramatic images of the blaze at the hotel which has been derelict for the past 20 years.

There is a large cordon in place with Temple Way closed in both directions between Redcliffe Way and Victoria Street and people have been told to avoid the area.

Avon Fire & Rescue Service has said that there have been no casualties and people from a neighbouring building have been safely evacuated.

Local councillor Ed Plowden shared a video of firefighters using jets on the disused hotel.

He said: “Lots of smoke and fire appliances at the old Grovesnor hotel in Bristol.

“It is really taking off now.”

Witness Nathan Pumpkin told Bristol World: “We came back from dinner and saw lots of smoke, flames and ash raining down above us. Within a few minutes the fire service and closed off the road and began tackling the blaze.

“The surrounding area is an eerie, silent grey looking. People seem to be keeping their distance and respecting the road closures.

"Back in the hotel [the nearby Doubletree Hilton] now but we can still see smoke and flames pouring into the skyline.”

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Fire & Rescue said: "Our Control Room received a call at 21:58 regarding an incident on Victoria Street in Bristol city centre and have taken a large volume of calls since.

"On arrival, crews from Temple, Bedminster, Hicks Gate, Kingswood, Patchway, Avonmouth, Bath and Weston-Super-Mare found a fire on the ground floor of a derelict building and are working to tackle the blaze.

"There were fortunately no casualties. A number of people were safely evacuated from a neighbouring building.

"We advise people to avoid the area while the incident is ongoing."

Travel West has said: "Temple way has been closed in both directions between Redcliffe Way and Victoria Street, use alternative routes. Expect delays."

The building has been decaying for over two decades and was earlier in the year considered for a multi-million pound buy out.

The city council has plans to purchase the site as part of regeneration plan for the area.

The 70-bedroom hotel first opened in 1875 but since its closure has been left to rot.
