Firefighters battle garage blaze as huge plume of black smoke billows into the sky

Firefighters are tackling a blaze at a garage in New Mills.

A huge plume of black smoke is coming from the fire on Hyde Bank Road and can be seen for miles.

Crews from fire services in Derbyshire and Manchester were called to the incident just after 1.30pm.

The fire is believed to involve scrap tyres and a vehicle at a garage.

There are currently no reports of any injuries.

Video footage taken at the scene shows the fierce blaze raging shortly before fire crews arrived.

Footage shows a large plume of smoke coming from the fire which can be seen over rooftops from miles away.

People are being asked to avoid the area and residents who live nearby are urged to keep their windows and doors closed.

A spokesperson from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We are currently dealing with a garage fire on Hyde Bank Road in New Mills.

"We were called at 1.36pm.

"The fire involves scrap tyres and a vehicle.

"We've got two appliances from Buxton and Glossop at the scene.

"The Manchester Fire Service from Marple are also in attendance. Police are enroute.

"We are asking people to avoid the area in line with current social distancing advice and to keep their windows and doors closed."
