Firefighters battle for four hours to put out fire at old warehouse in Heaton

An old warehouse in Newcastle was left badly damaged after a fire.

Fire crews tackled the blaze at the derelict building on Chillingham Road, in Heaton, for four hours on Saturday.

Three engines were sent to the scene at around 8.15am and firefighters used an aerial platform, a jet, a hose reel and breathing apparatus to put out the fire.

The crews left the scene at around 12.20pm.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service says the cause of the blaze is unknown at this stage.

A spokesperson said: "We received a call at 8.15am to a derelict building on fire. It was an old warehouse which was quite badly damaged by fire.

"One main jet was in use as well as one hose reel and four breathing apparatus.

"We had three appliances in attendance and they came away at 12.20pm. The cause of the fire is currently not known."

Police temporarily closed a section of Chillingham Road while firefighters tackled the blaze.

The road near the Metro station was also shut.
