Firefighters are currently tackling a blaze in Kilwinning town centre.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were alerted at 1.09pm to reports of a fire within a vacant building on Byres Road, Kilwinning.

"Operations Control mobilised four fire appliances and firefighters are working to extinguish the fire which has taken hold within the one-and-a-half storey building.

"There are currently no reported casualties.

"Crews will remain on scene until the area is made safe."

An eye witness on the scene said the fire appeared to have taken hold in vacant premises in the town.

He added: "There are four fire engines on site tackling the fire."

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "About 1.13pm Police Scotland were alerted by Scottish Fire and Rescue to reports of a building fire at Byres Road, Kilwinning.

"Officers are currently at scene assisting with traffic control in the area."
