Firefighters battle blaze in Belfast apartment

Firefighters were called to deal with a fire in a Belfast apartment this morning.

Crews were called to Ladybrook Cross, in the west of the city, at 11.10am today, Thursday, March 18.

They were called to deal with a fire in a ground floor apartment.

Translink had to divert its Metro 10a service onto a different route for a short time due to the fire, but the service is now back to normal.

There were three fire crews in attendance at the incident, two from Cadogan Fire Station and one from Springfield Fire Station.

A spokeswoman for the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighters were called to a fire in a ground floor apartment of a 2 storey property in Ladybrook Cross, Belfast. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used 2 jets to extinguish the fire.

"A resident was taken into the care of Northern Ireland Ambulance Service. The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental ignition and the incident was dealt with by 12.27pm."

Meanwhile, a suspect device found in Fermanagh today was “small and crude, but potentially viable”, the police have said.

The news emerged after a large scale search operation in Enniskillen which came in the wake of claims made by the Continuity IRA on Monday that the group had fired shots at the local police station and left a device nearby.

There were unconfirmed reports yesterday that three items had been taken away for further examination.
