Firefighters battle blaze at popular fish and chip shop as people told to avoid area

People are being asked to avoid an area of Liverpool as firefighters deal with a dramatic fire at a popular fish and chip shop.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service was called to Kenny's chip shop on Aigburth Road, Aigburth this afternoon.

Four fire engines arrived at the scene at 4pm after the fire broke out.

Once crews arrived they found the ground floor of the chip shop was alight and firefighters used CO2 extinguishers and hose reel jets to tackle the blaze.

One lane of Aigburth Road is currently closed and motorists are being asked to avoid the area by the fire service and police.

Videos sent to the ECHO show long queues of traffic forming on the key south Liverpool route.

After battling the fire for an hour crews were able to get the blaze under control at 5pm.

A spokesperson from the service said: "The fire in a chip shop on Aigburth Road has now been extinguished.

"Merseyside Police are now in attendance and are assisting with traffic management. Please find alternative routes if you can."

Both Merseyside Police and Merseyside Fire and Rescue remain at the scene.

While the majority of the fire appears to have been put out, smoke can still be seen coming from the building and four fire engines remain at the scene.
