Firefighters battle blaze at fish and chip shop in Withington

Firefighters battled a blaze at a fish and chip shop in Withington.

Crews were called to the Better Cod, on Wilmslow Road, just after 10.10am on Wednesday .

Four fire engines and a hydraulic platform were called to the scene.

Images shared on social media showed smoke pouring out of the front of the shop.

There are no reports of any injuries.

Two people managed to escape before crews arrived.

The street was cordoned off between Swinbourne Grove and Parsonage Road.

Police could be seen directing traffic around the corden.

The road has sine re-opened.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said the blaze is now under control and firefighters remained at the scene dampening down the flames.

She said: "We were called at 10.11am to a fire on Wilmslow Road in Withington.

"Upon arrival two people have self-rescued.

"We had four fire engines from Gorton, Hyde, Moss Side and Withington, alongside the hydraulic platfrom from Whitehill, at the scene.

"Firefighters used breathing apparatus and two hose reels."
