Firefighters are tackling a blaze at a block of flats in Hulme

Firefighters are tackling a blaze at an apartment block in Hulme.

Crews were called to the building on Hulme High Street, near to the Asda supermarket, just before 7.15am this morning.

The fire is located in a communal area of the building on the fourth floor.

Firefighters are carrying out searches and checking for any potential casualties on the third, floor, fifth and six floors of the property.

The ambulance service are also at the scene in case any residents have suffered smoke inhalation, although there are no reports of any injuries at this stage.

Fire crews are now working to ventilate the building.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 7.14am this morning to reports of a fire in an apartment block on Hulme High Street, on the fourth floor, at the back of the property overlooking the church.

"The ambulance service are there assisting individuals who may have experienced smoke inhalation. There are no reports of any injuries

"Three fire engines, one from Moss Side, one from Salford and one from Manchester Central are at the scene currently.

"The fire involved a communal area. We used two hose reels, four breathing apparatus and extractor fans."
