Firefighters and police officers called to blaze at popular beauty spot

Emergency services were called out to a fire at a popular beauty spot in Oldham on Tuesday.

Fire crews and police officers were alerted to the blaze at Dovestone Reservoir.

Initially, it was thought that the blaze had been started by a group of youths.

When crews arrived at the popular walking spot, the fire had been extinguished.

Firefighters dampened down the area as a precaution.

Police officers 'spoke to' five people at the scene.

They were all issued with fines for breaching coronavirus lockdown rules.

A post on the GMP Saddleworth and Lees Facebook page read: "Earlier this evening Police and fire brigade received a report of youths starting a fire at Dovestones reservoir.

"On arrival the fire had been extinguished and fire brigade further doused the area with water for safety.

"Five adults were spoken to and issued with fines for breach of covid regulations."

Visitors have flocked to Dovestone Reservoir on numerous occasions during lockdown, despite repeated warnings asking people to 'stay local' and concerns over social distancing.

Pictures taken last weekend showed scores of cars lining the road up to the reservoir.

A traffic officer was pictured handing out parking tickets to several cars parked on the pavement.
