Firefighter suffered serious burns to head during devastating moorland blaze

A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) crew member suffered a serious head injury as they battled a giant blaze on Marsden Moor in 2019.

Crews from across Yorkshire and Greater Manchester valiantly fought for several days over the Easter weekend in April last year to bring the fire under control.

The fire, which was started after someone discarded a barbecue on Sunday, April 21, quickly spread over an area of almost 4,000 acres.

A new report released by WYFRS states that the huge fire "tested the capabilities" of crews as their resources were severely stretched.

Three firefighters were subject to emergency evacuations on Monday, April 22 - with one suffering serious burn injuries to their head.

The Marsden Moor fire burned for three days and cost WYFRS an extra £45,000 in increased firefighting resources and loss of equipment.

A subsequent fire at Ilkley Moor over the same weekend also saw 15 crews stationed at the West Yorkshire beauty spot and stretched firefighting resources to the maximum.

The WYFRS report has highlighted a number of key issues from the two fires and several urgent measures are being put in place to help firefighters, in case similar moorland blazes occur this year.

Crews will receive extra wildfire training and specialist protection equipment will be made available, while stations located near moorlands will be given increased knowledge of the risk of wildfires.

Mohammed Zulkifl was sent to a young offenders institution for 27 months last year after admitting that he lit a grass fire on Ilkley Moor because he was cold.
