Firefighter pleads not guilty to fire station arson

The station and two fire trucks were destroyed in the blaze.

A volunteer firefighter has pleaded not guilty to charges related to a blaze that destroyed a Tasmanian rural fire station.

Nathaniel Hendrik Brouwer, 28, was charged with one count of attempted arson of the Middleton Fire Station on July 1 this year and arson of the premises on July 8.

Brouwer was suspended from duty with the Tasmanian Fire Service following the charges.

His colleagues responded to the July 8 blaze with three trying to open the station's roller door to save the trucks inside and use them to fight the fire.

Four were injured in the attempt — two for burns on their hands and all for smoke inhalation.

The station was destroyed, along with two trucks, and the total damage has been estimated at $600,000.
