Heartbreak for firefighter who raced to blaze at his own home to find wife dead inside

A firefighter responded to a blaze at his own home only to find his wife dead in the inferno.

Corey Logan, from Miami-Dade in Florida, raced to his own home on Tuesday afternoon.

The emergency services worker was aboard the first fire engine that responded to the blaze.

When Mr Logan went into his burning home he found his wife, who has not been named, dead in their bedroom.

She had long suffered health problems and had been unable to escape the flames and smoke, the Miami Herald reported.

“At this time, out of respect for the family, we kindly ask for privacy as they are dealing with this tragic loss,” spokeswoman for the service Erika Benitez said.

“We thank you for your patience and cooperation as we are focusing on supporting our firefighter and their family.”

It is not currently known what caused the fire.

Mr Logan was working an overtime shift when he responded to the call-out to his own home, according to a GoFundMe set up by one of his colleagues.

"Shortly after lunch Corey’s life changed in a heartbeat," co-worker Christopher Morales wrote.

"Shortly after lunch Corey received a Ring notification on his phone which showed a neighbor frantically banging on his front door which led him to believe something was wrong at his house.

"Corey has been his wife’s caretaker for many years as she had many medical conditions.

"Everyday not at the firehouse he was taking care of her like no other.

"After getting the notification we hopped on the rig and headed to his house lights and sirens."

They arrived at the home to find the "worst case scenario.”

"There was heavy smoke and fire coming from his house with his wife inside," Mr Morales continued.

"We did our job and put the fire out and searched as fast as we could but were too late.

"She passed away as a result of the fire.  This is a fireman's worst nightmare.

"Not only did he show up first to his house burning, but also lost the love of his life as a result of the fire as well."

The GoFundMe has already raised £110,000 to help Mr Logan "get his life back together".
