Firefighter caught red-handed illegally selling masks

Amid the outbreak of the new coronavirus, a male firefighter of the Shida Fire Department in Yaizu, Shizuoka Prefecture, took equipment masks without permission and offered them for sale using the marketplace app Mercari, The Yomiuri Shimbun has learned.

According to the fire department's Oigawa fire station, when they investigated a decrease in their inventory of masks, they discovered that the firefighter had sold them sometime this month. The fire station has not revealed the number of masks that were sold or their price.

Influenced by the widespread outbreak of the new coronavirus, protective masks are being sold online at high prices. The fire department has filed a criminal complaint with the Yaizu Police Station of the Shizuoka prefectural police.
