And a Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said two crews and a search and rescue team were sent to the scene.

He confirmed firefighters helped the trapped man - who was unable to open the driver's door of the BMW - after he was assessed by paramedics.

He was taken to hospital for further assessment. The lorry driver was unhurt.

One witness told the ECHO: "There has been a big crash coming out of Stockbridge Village. Fire people and police everywhere!"

Police confirmed they were also called to the scene.

What to do if you have a road accident

A spokesman said: "We were called to a road traffic accident involving a HGV and a car in Stockbridge Lane by the roundabout and the fire service were also in attendance."

He said although the road was not closed the accident "would have caused disruption".
