Fireball engulfs car on Jesmond street as witnesses see suspected arsonist 'legging it' down road

This is the fireball that engulfed a car after it was torched on a quiet residential street in Jesmond .

Witnesses described seeing a man set fire to the vehicle before "legging it" down Fernwood Road shouting "don't tell anyone".

Emergency services were called to the blaze in the Newcastle suburb just after 10pm last Thursday.

They arrived to find flames had engulfed a car just in front of popular wedding venue The Mansion House, off Osborne Road.

An investigation has now been launched to find the suspected arsonist.

A witness said: "Some people saw a guy set fire  - presumably with some petrol - and leg it down the street shouting 'don’t tell anyone' or words to that effect, despite setting a car on fire in a residential area."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly after 10pm on Thursday, October 17, we were informed by the fire brigade that a vehicle was on fire on Fernwood Road in Jesmond.

"Emergency services attended and the fire was extinguished. No-one was injured.

"An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire, which police are treating as suspected arson.

"Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting reference 1231 171019 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "One crew from Newcastle Central attended a car on fire on Fernwood Road. We were on the scene at 10.04pm and left at 10.25pm."
