Fire which was 'started deliberately by children' destroys part of converted barn

Firefighters were called to a serious blaze in Westhoughton.

Crews spent two-and-a-half hours battling the flames at a converted barn on Wigan Road near Wearish Lane last night (Monday).

It is believed the blaze, at the commercial premises, was started deliberately by youths at around 7.45pm.

Crews from Atherton, Hindley and Bolton Central attended. Despite firefighters' best efforts, part of the building was destroyed.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze started externally, but spread to the inside of the building, which is currently under renovation.

No one was hurt.
