Fire warning for western NSW

People in western NSW have been warned to prepare for severe fire danger at the weekend. (AAP)

The fire risk in NSW this weekend will be at its highest so far this season, thanks to soaring temperatures, winds and high fuel loads.

The NSW Rural Fire Service says residents in the state's west need to prepare for Very High to Severe fire danger.

The mercury is set to reach the mid-40s and strong, dry and gust winds are likely.

The risk is particularly heightened in the Riverina area in the state's south west.

NSW RFS Commissioner Rob Rogers says total fire bans will likely be declared for some areas on Saturday and Sunday.

Residents should make survival plans, check the fire danger for their area, and stay up to date on local fires with the RFS website or app.

Commissioner Rogeres said the risk of grass fires was higher than normal because of the vegetation growth from recent rainfall.

"Grass fires spread quickly and threaten lives and livelihoods with little warning," he said.

"Preparation is the key and we need families and households to review and discuss their bush fire survival plan so everyone knows what they need to do in the event of a fire.

"With the holidays upon us, if you are travelling, know what the conditions and fire risk are of where you are travelling through and the area you are visiting."
