Fire warning after families caught using disposable barbecues on Marsden moor

A family sparked a fire alert after being caught using a disposable barbecue on the boundary between moors in Saddleworth and Huddersfield.

Firefighters have issued a warning following the discovery on Bank Holiday Monday (May 31), in an area already hit by moorland blazes this year.

The incident follows the re-launch of a campaign by West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service to raise awareness about the danger of lighting disposable barbecues.

A crew from Slaithwaite Fire Station turned out to Easter Gate, Marsden - near the site of a major moorland blaze in 2019 - to extinguish the barbecue.

The fire was put out and 'advice given' on current Public Space Protection Order restrictions which prevent the lighting of barbecues where there is a threat of grass fires.

A second fire later in the evening in the Huddersfield area also started by a barbecue was dealt with by a crew from Meltham station.

Meanwhile, news of the Easter Gate incident sparked outrage on the Facebook.

One posted: "It should be a £,1000 fine and the call out charge for the idiots taking barbecues onto the moors."

Another said: "'Advice given' - exactly why people keep on doing it, there's no deterrent to stop! Get them fined, no excuses any more for such stupidity and carelessness."

And someone else said: "It's beyond time that these so called barbecues were banned from sale.

"Anyone found selling them, should be given the cost of calling the fire brigade out."

In March, a 'Be Moor Aware' appeal was launched by West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, calling on the public to be more vigilant especially during public holidays, especially in open areas vulnerable to grass fires.
