Fire thugs torch Glasgow school building in weekend attack

Teachers have been left shocked after firebugs torched a Glasgow school on Saturday night.

The fire started in a bin on the grounds of St Catherine's Primary in Barmulloch before it reached the building and scorched the walls.

Emergency services were called and firefighters battled the flames before they spread throughout the building.

No one was injured as a result of the blaze and the school will reopen to the children of key workers as usual today.

A spokesperson for the school said on social media: "Shocked to receive a call last night about a fire in the school.

"Mr Reynolds and I were up today and thankfully no serious damage and we’ll be open as normal tomorrow.

"If anyone has any information please don’t hesitate to contact me directly. This is our school, I’d be heartbroken to see it damaged."

A Glasgow City Council spokesperson said: "A minor fire within a bin store caused by vandals has been dealt with appropriately and the school remains unaffected."

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called to a report of a fire at St Catherine's Primary School last night at around 6.05pm.

"Two appliances attended and the fire was extinguished.

"There were no reports of any injuries."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 6.10pm on Saturday, 16 January, 2021, police received report of a fire at St Catherine’s Primary School on Rye Road in Glasgow.

"The fire was extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and no-one was injured.

"The fire is being treated as wilful and enquiries are ongoing."
