Fire tears through house at Lake Macquarie

A home at Lake Macquarie has been gutted by fire after a blaze ripped through a house at Booragul on Tuesday morning.

Firefighters were called to the Merriwa Street home about 11am, where they found the property well alight.

One person, who had been inside the house, escaped uninjured.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known and Fire and Rescue NSW investigators have been tasked with looking into how the fire started.

It is the third serious fire in the Hunter Region in three days.

A family made a lucky escape, uninjured, when a two storey home went up in flames on Sandgate Road at Shortland in the early hours of Sunday.

Then, about 5am on Monday, 55-year-old Graham Cameron died when his unit on Fullerton Street at Stockton caught fire.

A senior fire investigator told the Newcastle Herald after the Stockton blaze that firefighters wanted to repeat their ongoing warning about fire safety in the winter months.

"With these really cold temperatures - we've still got a lot of winter to go - make sure you've got working smoke alarms, make sure you keep heaters at least a metre away from flammable substances and don't overload powerboards," Superintendent Greg Symonds said.
