A fire tore through four hectares of grassland in south London on Monday evening.
Control officers first received calls of a fire near Beddington Lane in Mitcham at around 6.23pm.
Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were subsequently dispatched to tackle the blaze.
Images on social media showed tunnels of smoke rising into the air over the green space.
The affected area was close to Beddington Park and the Beddington Power Plant - though both were unaffected.
Crews from Norbury, Croydon, and Wimbledon fire stations had the fire under control by 8.10pm.
A Terrain Support Vehicle - designed to transport extra equipment closer to open ground fires - was also sent to the scene, carrying 475 litres of water and fire beaters.
Wildfire beaters are long-handled tools with flat rubber attachments on the end, used to thump flames, depriving them of oxygen.
