Fire tears through family homes as people evacuated on Liverpool street

A blaze ripped through a row of terraced houses, leaving roofs seriously damaged.

Fire crews from Merseyside Fire and Rescue were called in the early hours of Sunday to Great Mersey Street in Kirkdale. When firefighters arrived at the scene they found the roof of the mid terrace house "well alight".

The blaze also affected the two houses on either side of the property. Six fire engines were sent to the scene and pictures taken by an ECHO reader show firefighters tackling the blaze using an aerial ladder.

When the ECHO attended the scene just after 8am on Sunday firefighters and Merseyside Police were still there. Two cordons were in place, one from St Alphonsus Street and another at the top of Great Mersey Street to where it meets Stanley Road.

Forensics officers were also at the scene and fire investigators were using a drone to assess the damage. The roofs of two of the terraces appeared to be badly damaged and firefighters were working to make the scene safe.

One neighbour told the ECHO the houses were only built around two or three years ago and were also next to a housing development which is underway.

A man who lives nearby described his shock at seeing the scene this morning and said: "Oh my god a fire. A fire is awful." A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue confirmed all the residents involved have all been evacuated, are safe and accounted for.

People living nearby were told to keep their windows and doors closed. Those with an existing health condition should keep medicines nearby and if any ill effects are experienced dial NHS 111.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue said this morning: "Fire crews have been called to a fire involving a number of houses this morning in Great Mersey Street, Kirkdale L5. Crews were alerted at 4.18am and on scene at 4.23am. Six fire engines and an aerial appliance are in attendance.

"Crews arrived to find the roof of a mid terrace property well alight and began to tackle the fire with hose reel jets. The fire was affecting properties either side and residents were evacuated.

"Firefighters entered the property which was the source of the fire wearing breathing apparatus and the aerial appliance was set up to tackle the fire from above. The fire was also fought at the rear of the building with a hose reel jet and a main branch hose.

"The fire has spread to multiple properties in the terrace with firefighters removing roof tiles to get to the fire. Residents involved have all evacuated and are all safe an accounted for.

"Residents nearby should keep doors and windows closed. Those with an existing health condition should keep medicines nearby and if any ill effects are experienced dial NHS 111.

"Merseyside Police are also in attendance. The incident is ongoing."
