Fire services attend pub blaze site for the second time in 24 hours following reports of smoke

Fire services were called to an empty pub in Newport for the second time in 24 hours after reports of more smoke billowing from the building.

Crew members from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service took almost three hours to tackle a fire at the Open Hearth pub on Hendre Farm Drive in Ringland at around 2pm on Sunday.

However, crew members attended the scene again this morning at around 9am due to reports of smoke coming from the building.

Two appliances attended for around half an hour on Monday.

The Open Hearth bar in Ringland was once a popular drinking spot, but closed down in early 2020 and has been beset with issues of anti-social behaviour and illegal dumping since.

There have been a number of fires on the site previously, including one which gutted part of the building in November.

In August, Newport council issued a notice to the leaseholder of the land under section 215 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 in order to seek improvements to the condition and appearance of the land following requests from residents.

The notice came into effect on October 3 with a two month compliance period, which ended on 3 December.

And this week a council spokesperson said: "We recognise the detrimental condition of this site and we are taking further steps to get it remedied by the leaseholder as well as discussing its possible future use."

In November, one resident told WalesOnline that the pub had been "a magnet for fly tipping" since it shut.

The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said others in the area had raised concerns to their local representative regarding the site, which they said had been "set on fire about ten times" since closing.

"People go there to buy drugs and fly tip, it's down a hill so nobody can see them. We have had motorbikes and cars set on fire and left there too in the past," the resident said, adding that redevelopment of the area was badly needed.

A spokesperson for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "At approximately 2.06pm on Sunday, January 17, we received reports of a fire in Ringland, Newport.

"Multiple crews attended the scene and used specialist equipment to extinguish the fire.

"A stop message was received at approximately 5.02pm.

"On Monday, January 18 at approximately 9am crews re-inspected the property due to reports of smoke.

"Two appliances attended the scene and the incident concluded at approximately 9.28am."

A spokesperson from Gwent Police said: "We got a call from the fire service at about 2.10pm yesterday, Sunday January 17, reporting the fire at the Open Hearth public house. They requested assistance with traffic. The road was closed while the fire service dealt with the fire and was reopened at about 5pm."
