Fire services attend abandoned pub in Newport for the third time in a week after a refuse fire

Fire services have had to attend an abandoned pub in Newport for the third time in a week.

Crews from Maindee and Duffryn station at South Wales Fire and Rescue Service attended the Open Hearth pub on Hendre Farm Drive in Ringland on Thursday afternoon after reports of a refuse fire.

It was the third time in the space of a week that fire services have had to attend the site after attending on Monday morning following reports of smoke coming from the building.

That was less than 24 hours after services tackled a three-hour long fire at the pub, which closed at the start of 2020.

There have been a number of fires on the site including one which gutted part of the building in November.

And locals have also raised concerns over the area being used for illegal dumping and anti-social behaviour.

This week a spokesperson from Newport council said it was aware of the need to address concerns regarding the site.

They said: "We recognise the detrimental condition of this site and we are taking further steps to get it remedied by the leaseholder as well as discussing its possible future use."

A spokesperson for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "At approximately 4.52pm on Thursday, January 21, we received reports of a refuse fire in Ringland, Newport. Crews from Maindee and Duffryn station attended the scene and extinguished the fire.

"A stop message was received at approximately 5.22pm."
