Fire service warning after toddler accidentally starts house blaze by turning on hob

A safety warning has been issued after a house blaze was sparked by a toddler accidentally turning on a hob.

Neighbours called fire crews after hearing a fire alarm and spotting thick black smoke billowing out of a window.

It emerged that the toddler had managed to turn the hob on before going out with a parent - who did not realise it was on.

Items such as a chopping board had been left on top of the hob, which then started the fire, Northants Live reports.

Northamptonshire Fire Service has urged residents to check appliances before leaving their homes, and ensure no items are left around cookers.

A spokesperson said: "We would urge parents, if they have children who may like playing with switches or have previously tried to turn appliances on, to double check appliances before leaving.

"It is also good to close doors as they will protect the rest of your house if a fire starts in one room."

Firefighters were called to the house in Irthlingborough at 2.35pm on Tuesday (June 15).

The fire service added: "Because the homeowner had working smoke alarms that alerted quick-thinking neighbours, we've been able to save the home.

"Install smoke alarms on every level and check every month they're working. If you hear a neighbour's alarm, please investigate."
