Fire service warning after barbecue party led to large blaze in Nottinghamshire woods

The fire service has condemned those having a barbecue in Nottinghamshire woodland after a fire broke out.

Flames ripped through trees and undergrowth and firefighters had to battle the fire for two hours before it was under their control.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said the area was filled with "discarded cans and food wrappers, a disposable barbecue and a makeshift camp".

The camp was discovered in a wooded area known as the Warsop Windmill woods in north Nottinghamshire.

Pictures from the scene show flames burning through the undergrowth, which left a wide area of the woods destroyed.

Firefighters battled the flames for two hours in Warsop Windmill woods on April 5 (Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service)

Speaking of the incident, which took place on the morning of Monday, April 5, the fire service said: "Crews from Edwinstowe and Warsop attended an incident on Monday morning in Warsop Windmill woods.

"A camp fire being lit on the dry grass caused a fire of approximately 150-200m2, meaning crews were at this incident for around two hours.

"Any types of fires including barbecues should not be lit in forestry areas unless it is a designated area.

"Not only is it causing harm to the environment, but it could also prevent a fire from happening."
