Fire service race to Saughton Prison after cell fire

Fire crews raced to Saughton Prison this evening after reports of a fire in a cell.

The emergency services were alerted to fire at around 8:10pm on Tuesday (4 August).

Locals reported a large emergency service presence, including Police Scotland, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and the ambulance service, the Daily Record reported.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "We were called to a fire in a cell but it was extinguished before we arrived."

There were no reports of any injuries.

Edinburgh Live has contacted the Scottish Prison Service for comment.

It comes after we reported a man has been camped outside the prison for a number of days.

The man, who a local identified as Robert Dnaliczuk, has been outside Saughton Prison since at least 30 July.

Concerned locals have offered him food and water, which he reluctantly accepted.

Faraz Farooq, who spoke to the man, said he told him that he had been jailed for possession marijuana.

He claimed to have been left disabled after being beaten in the jail.
