Fire Service confirms cause of a loud bang heard across Nottingham

The cause of a loud bang heard in the city centre on Friday night has been revealed by the Fire Service.

At around 6pm on October 25, firefighters were spotted near to the BBC Island and London Road following reports from people who said they heard a loud bang.

People took to social media to say they heard the noise from as far away as  Sneinton, with one person saying it sounded like a rocket taking off.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue said the bang was caused by a swan flying into an electric cable.

A spokeswoman said: "We were called at around 6pm to the junction of London Road and Canal Street to reports of a large quantity of smoke going across the roundabout.

"It was caused by a swan coming into contact with electric cables which caused excessive smoke at the scene.

"Unfortunately, we have no details on what happened to the swan or its remains."
