Fire service called to tackle blaze in South Belfast

Firefighters were called to tackle a blaze in South Belfast on Thursday night.

Ten fire crews were sent to the incident between Ormeau Road and Donegall Pass that started shortly after 8:30pm.

A large plume of smoke has been seen rising from the scene of the fire.

It is unclear at this stage what caused the fire but it is understood that it has caused serious damage to the buildings roof.

On Thursday evening, a spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Fire Service said: “NIFRS is in attendance at an ongoing Incident on Donegall Pass, Belfast.

"Fire crews are dealing with a significant building fire.

"Seven fire appliances, three specialist appliances and over 50 personnel are at the scene dealing with the incident.

"We would ask members of the public to avoid the area if possible."

Meanwhile, it has since been confirmed that it was the Belfast Multi-Cultural Association (BMCA) building that caught fire.

In a post on Facebook, BMCA said they were "heartbroken" and "shocked" by Thursday's blaze.

The post read: "Unfortunately tonight BMCA is ablaze. We don’t have any details about how this happened. Fortunately none of our volunteers were injured.

"We are immensely grateful to the fire services who were there promptly.

"We are heartbroken and shocked by these events but it will not deter us from any of our work. Thank you to everyone who have been in contact to check up on us."
