Eight bins were destroyed by a blaze after a disposable barbecue was tossed away while still hot.

Firefighters rushed to Arley Avenue in Bury at around 9pm last night to reports of a bin fire.

When they arrived, they found that a row of eight wheelie bins ablaze in the residential street.

Firefighters discovered that the fire had been caused by a disposable barbecue, thrown in one of the bins before it had time to cool down.

Bury Fire Station watch manager Steve Urmston said: "We attended a fire at a property in Arley Avenue.

"The fire had caught onto eight wheelie bins - caused by a disposable barbecue that had been left in one of the bins.

"There was nothing left of the bins.

"The fire also damaged the guttering and roof of a property."

Firefighters have now issued advice on how to properly dispose of the barbecues.

Mr Urmston added: "We do not want barbecues on the moors, but if you are having these barbecues at home - be careful to make sure you leave the barbecue outside in the garden overnight to let it cool down."
