Fire service called as plume of smoke rises from Broadmarsh car park construction site

The emergency services were called to a fire on the top floor of the new Broadmarsh car park development

A plume of smoke could be seen rising from the roof of the structure in Collin Street, which is currently under-construction.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service sent two engines to the incident at around 5.34pm on Thursday, June 25.

A spokesperson said: "Two appliances from London Road Station attended a report of fire on the sixth floor of a multi-storey car park under construction on Collin Street, Nottingham.

"The fire was out on the arrival of firefighters who used a thermal imaging camera to confirm that."

The city council is developing the new library and car park, which stands next door to intu's shopping centre, and work is currently well underway at the site.

The terracotta-coloured facade of the building has been installed along with the windows, and once complete, it will have 1,150 car parking spaces, a new children’s library, a bus and coach station and retail units.

Intu, which owns both the Broadmarsh and Victoria centres, is on the eve of a crunch decision with lenders.

The business has administrators on standby under its latest contingency plans, as company bosses engage in critical talks over its £4.5bn debt.

These talks will determine what happens after the coronavirus pandemic and come after bank lenders agreed a loan waiver on its debts.

However, the agreement expires on Friday, June 26.
