Fire service attend flooding incident and stumble across cannabis factory

Fire crews came across more than they bargained for when they attended a flooding incident in Stapleford.

Crews were called out to a shop in Montrose Court to deal with a flood on Friday, July 5.

It was then discovered that the flat above the shop was being used to cultivate cannabis.

Police gained entry to the property at around 6am.

Councillor Richard MacRae, independent councillor for Stapleford North, said the flooding happened at Broxtowe Play Forum which provides children's play equipment and has been in the town since 1985. The flat is not connected to the Play Forum in any way.

He said: "All the residents came out into the street and said an alarm had been going off since the early hours of the morning.

"Police carried out a drugs raid, there is a police van and car, and they brought out a significant amount of what looks like cannabis."

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police added: "Officers were called at around 6am on Friday, July 5 to Montrose Court, Stapleford to assist Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service following reports of a cannabis grow.

"Officers are on the scene and continue to investigate.

"There has also been flooding to the shop below, the shop owner is aware and is working closely with officers and fire.

"If anyone has any information please call 101 quoting incident number 100 of 5 July 2019."
