Fire sends cloud of smoke billowing across north Manchester

A large fire sent plumes of smoke billowing across north Manchester last night.

The blaze broke out in Blackley shortly before 6pm.

A number of car tyres were on fire on open land on Blackley New Road, close to Blackley Forest, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said.

It sent plumes of thick black smoke billowing up into the air which was visible for several miles, including from the city centre..

Firefighters spent nearly an hour at the scene, near the junction with Ellbourne Road, tackling the blaze and they used jets to extinguish the flames.

A spokesperson for GMFRS said: “At approximately 5.55pm on Wednesday, 11 th August, firefighters were called to reports of a fire on Blackley New Road, at the junction with Ellbourne Road, in Manchester.

“One fire engine from Blackley fire station quickly attended the scene.

"The fire involved a quantity of vehicle tyres on open land.

“Firefighters used jets to extinguish the fire and were in attendance for around 50 minutes.”
