Smoke billows across area as fire rips through kitchen above Aberdeen restaurant

A fire ripped through a flat believed to be above a Turkish restaurant in Aberdeen.

Emergency crews were called to Skene Street on Tuesday afternoon.

The alarm was raised just before 4pm.

Flames could be seen billowing out of the roof of food joint, Nargile.

Police were drafted in to assist fire crews and close off roads in the surrounding area.

No injuries have been reported at this time.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman told the Record: "Police were called to assist the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service at a fire on Skene Street, Aberdeen.

"Road closures are in place while emergency services respond to this."

A SFRS spokesman told the Record: "We were called at 3.49pm to a fire in Skene Street, Aberdeen.

"At its height, 3 pumps were mobilised as well as a height vehicle.

"The fire broke out at a two-storey building used as a restaurant and store room, within a disused kitchen.

"We have one appliance in attendance but they should be leaving the scene soon.

"There are no reports of injuries at this time."

It comes just hours after fifteen families were made homeless for the night following a fire that ripped through a block of flats in Glasgow.

We told how emergency services scrambled to Lincluden Path near McCulloch Street in Pollokshields just before 1.15pm.

Local community hub, The Bowling Green, launched a public appeal asking for donations of clothes and shoes to help those affected by the fire.

Police confirmed that people living in the affected property plus 13 other flats had to be evacuated.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman told the Record: "A around 1.30pm on Tuesday, June 1 police were called to a fire at a flat in Lincluden Path, Glasgow.

"Emergency services attended and the affected property, along with 13 other flats, were evacuated.

"Residents have been put in temporary accommodation.

"Maxwell Road at Kerr Street, and Shields Road at Bruce Road, remain closed.

"A joint investigation between Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is ongoing."

Fire crews revealed that nine appliances plus specialist units tackled the huge blaze.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service previously told the Record: “We are currently in attendance alongside emergency service partners at a fire at a three-storey block of flats on McCulloch Street, Glasgow.

“Operations Control mobilised nine fire appliances and further specialist units including an aerial platform ladder to the scene after the alarm was raised at 1.14pm on Tuesday, June 1.”
