Fire on M6 leads to traffic queues stretching back for miles

Drivers are facing delays of more than half an hour on a stretch of the M6 close to Merseyside.

A caravan fire has led to the closure of a lane on the southbound carriageway close to Charnock Richard.

The blaze is between Junction 28, for Leyland, and Junction 27, for Standish.

Highways England said fire and rescue crews had attended and tackled the flames.

Lane one is closed, leading to traffic queues that at one point stretched back six miles.

The fire came as heavy rain caused disruption on roads elsewhere.

A crash led to some delays on the M56, near Runcorn, while the North West Motorways Police earlier tweeted: "Sudden change in weather has resulted in a few road traffic collision's across the region, at the moment these are not resulting in carriageway closures, but if out and about please adjust your driving to suit the conditions of the road."

Merseyside is under a Met Office weather warning for thunderstorms, leading to travel warnings.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service advised: "Please be careful today and take note of this weather warning from the Met Office - driving conditions could be poor so consider whether you need to make the journey. Stay safe."
