Fire on Albert Drive in Glasgow sees 11 fire engines sent to tackle blaze

A Glasgow building fire which broke out on Sunday night is still being tackled by firefighters almost eight hours later.

Scottish Fire and Rescue deployed 11 fire crews to the scene after the blaze broke out on Albert Drive, in the Pollokshields area of the city, at 11.31pm on Sunday

Crews remain in the area as they continue to control the blaze at Strawberry Spice Gardens.

One eyewitness said: "The fire took a great hold of the building, especially the roof. I guess that is what cause the collapse."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said: "The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were alerted at 11.31pm on Sunday November 10 to reports of a fire within a building.

"Operations Control mobilised nine appliances and two height appliances to Albert Drive in the Pollokshields area.

"Crews are working to contain the fire that has taken hold within a commercial premises below flats."

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Road closures are currently in place in and around Albert Drive in the Pollokshields area of Glasgow, this is due to an ongoing incident being dealt with by Scottish Fire and Rescue and Police Scotland.

"Road closures are expected to be in place for several hours."

First Minister and Glasgow Southside MSP Nicola Sturgeon has tweeted since the blaze broke out.

She said: "Dreadful news for affected residents and businesses in Pollokshields - any constituents who need assistance, please email or call my office."
