A grass fire, possibly lit by an arsonist, has broken out near the Newcastle Inner City Bypass at Hillsborough in Lake Macquarie.
A spokesman for Fire and Rescue NSW said seven fire trucks were working to contain the fire, about one hectare in size, which he said was possibly deliberately lit.
It is not yet clear which side of the bypass the fire is burning on.
It comes as temperatures soar and amid a statewide fire ban.
