Fire near Edinburgh Zoo - Delays on Corstorphine Road during rush hour

A fire has broken out on a street near Edinburgh Zoo, causing lengthy delays for drivers on Monday evening.

The blaze caused Corstorphine Road and St John's Road to be closed in both directions.

Understood to be an electrical fire, it sent a cloud of black smoke across the road.

The fire caused tailbacks for traffic in the west of the city.

Several bus routes were diverted before the roads reopened later in the evening.

Initial reports had suggested the incident was a car on fire.

The fire service said it was an electrical drain - an unexpected power surge.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: “We took the call at 17.49 and mobilised our Sighthill unit, we have crews there who have confirmed that it’s an electrical drain (light) and crews are awaiting the arrival of Scottish Power.”
