Fire lit inside trunk of historic tree by vandals in Woodthorpe Park

An ancient tree in a Nottingham park could be at risk of collapse after it was vandalised.

The incident happened at Woodthorpe Park, near Sherwood where a large tree which is slightly open at the base showed signs of being scorched and burned from a fire.

Social media posts of the damaged tree described as being more than 200 years old, with a sign asking people to 'stop killing' the plant.

The poster read: "This tree is more than 200 years old. It gives us oxygen and shade and beauty.

"Please stop killing this tree with fire."

The message has since been removed, but city council park teams have been made aware.

They will inspect whether the tree is now a risk to the public as it could collapse from the damage.

A Nottingham City Council spokesperson said: “We would clearly expect people not to damage trees in any way.

"A fire set inside a tree trunk will at the very least reduce that tree’s lifespan, and at worse could cause a collapse.

"The council will inspect the tree again and recommend work if it presents a risk to the public.”
