Fire in Oxgangs as three appliances battle flames at 'derelict building'

Fire crews have spent much of the afternoon battling a blaze at a "derelict building" in Oxgangs.

Crews were called to the scene of the fire, on Oxgangs Farm Grove, at 2.42pm today.

Three appliances arrived and began working to put out the flames – as alarmed residents looked on.

Firefighters have been using two high-powered hose-reel jets and thermal imaging camera as they bid to ensure the safety of everyone nearby and bring the situation under control.

As of 5.15pm they were checking the building, and surrounding areas, to ensure that the fire hadn't spread at all.

Oxgangs councillor Scott Arthur said he was concerned to see that the property, which has been empty for a number of years, had been "targeted by arsonists".

He added: "It's unacceptable that firefighters had to risk their lives dealing with this."
