Two men were forced to leave their home in Mckinlay Street, Griffith, on Wednesday afternoon as fire took hold of a couch and other materials in the backyard of their property.

The men, who declined to be named, said they were inside watching TV when they first noticed the smoke.
The fire burnt fiercely and threw thick clouds of black pungent smoke across the neighbourhood, and also burnt a fence to an adjoining property.
At one stage there was concern the blaze may spread to a station wagon parked in the driveway but ACT Fire and Rescue was able to contain and swiftly extinguish the fire.

Three ACT Fire and Rescue pumpers attended the incident. The cause of the blaze is still being investigated.
