Fire & Ice returns to Durham with a whole new festival theme

A trail of ice sculptures and flaming beacons will once again transform the streets of Durham in February when a popular festival makes its return.

Fire & Ice will be back in February for the fifth year with a sparkling new display of icy creations which artists will be carving especially for the event and which will make up a city-wide trail for visitors to folllow.

Last year's festival - whose Heroes and Villains theme was captured in ice by the Glacial Arts company which created sculptures for the set of Game of Thrones as well as those for Newcastle's Lonewolf Ice Bar - proves a bigger success than ever, resulting in Durham's busiest ever February half-term.

And the festival is going all-out once again for 2020 with another inspired new look.

The theme for the February 21-22 programme is Travelling Through Time which has clearly sparked the imagination.

Among the planned ice sculptures reflecting ideas about travel, time, and time travel will be a replica of the North East's famous Stephenson's Rocket.

The yet-to-be-revealed full line-up of sculptures will feature alongside beacons of flames in locations across the city centre over the festival's two-day run.

Previous Fire & Ice attractions have included the Chocolate Block, where visitors are invited to find creative ways of melting sheets of ice in which chocolate bars have been frozen, and a grand finale featuring fire and a 'dancing' water-jets in the city's Market Place.

While ice artists will pre-carve their creations in large freezers ahead of transporting them to their chosen locations in specially-designed cooling vans, visitors to the festival can expect to be able to watch live displays of ice carving too.
