SAMUT PRAKAN: A fierce fire raged through a major cosmetic factory in Bang Phli district in the early hours of Saturday, causing an estimated 100 million baht in damage. No casualties were reported.

The fire broke out at Milott Laboratories Co on Theparak Road in tambon Bang Pla, said Pol Capt Mongkhol Yonwilas, a deputy investigation chief at Bang Phli police station, who was reported at around 1am on Saturday.

More than 20 fire trucks from tambon Bang Phli Yai and nearby areas were sent to combat the blaze, which was raging the warehouse, where many raw materials for cosmetic and perfume production were kept.

Loud bangs were heard while firemen were trying to extinguish the flames, which spread quickly to two nearby warehouses and three vehicles in the same compound. Firefighters took more than three hours, but failed to bring the fire under control.

They kept spraying water onto the fire-gutted warehouses and two 10,000-litre alcohol containers outside the warehouses to prevent explosions. The fire was brought under control in the morning. Nobody was injured.

Athiwat Akkrahad, 25, an employee, said the blaze occurred while workers were working at another building in the same compound of the factory. The fire started at a main warehouse where chemicals and other raw materials were kept.

Police believed an electrical short circuit was the cause of the fire, which destroyed the three warehouses. Damage was estimated to be at least 100 million baht. Authorities were investigating.
