Fire engulfs trees outside pensioner's home

Residents rushed to help an elderly man leave his home as fire engulfed a tree outside.

Trees were set alight on several streets in Norris Green and Clubmoor.

People fought the flames with fire extinguishers before the fire brigade arrived. The blaze was caught on camera.

Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service confirmed it was called to Wapshare Road on Monday, September 13.

A spokesperson for the service told the ECHO : "Crews were alerted at 9.49pm and on scene at 9.50pm. Two fire engines attended.

"On arrival crews found a conifer tree involved in fire. Firefighters used high pressure hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.

"Fire crews left the scene at 10.16pm.

" Merseyside Police also attended."

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police told the ECHO : "We were contacted by Mersey Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) at around 9.10pm [on] Monday 13th September, following reports that trees had been set alight deliberately in separate incidents in Clubmoor.

"The incidents are reported to have taken place in Lowerson Crescent, Wapshare Road and Townsend Avenue.

"There have been no reports of anyone being injured or any damage to any homes.

"CCTV and witness enquiries have been carried out in the local area and enquiries remain ongoing.

"Anyone with information is asked to DM @MerPolCC or @CrimestoppersUK on 0800 555 111 quoting reference 21000639068."
