Crews say two fires started just hours apart in Newport were 'deliberate'

Fire services attended fires they believe were started deliberately in Newport.

South Wales Fire Service attended two separate fires in Somerton, where they discovered a garden shed was on fire, and in Lliswerry, where a dumpster was on fire.

Both blazes took place on Thursday, July 16.

Emma Hall said she was at home in Somerton when she saw a shed on fire in the back garden of a house and called the fire brigade.

"It was a shed on fire on Laburnum Drive in Somerton. It was a empty house in the next street but their back garden is in front our way.

"We saw kids smashing the shed up, we thought they had gone but next thing it was up in flames.

"No idea who they were but there were about six or seven of them."

In Lliswerry, another resident said they saw a dumpster on fire on Somerton Road.

"We’ve had a lot of fires recently in Somerton/Liswerry. There’s been quite a lot in the area the last couple days.

"Thankfully fire services came quite quickly."

South Wales Fire Service confirmed the two incidents.

A spokesman said: "At approximately 9.06pm on Thursday 16 July, we received reports of a domestic fire in Somerton, Newport.

"Crews from Maindee and Malpas station attended the scene and extinguished the fire.

"The incident concluded at approximately 9.30pm. The supposed cause of the fire is believed to be deliberate."

"At approximately 11.33pm on Thursday 16 July, we received reports of a fire in Liswerry, Newport.

"Crews from Maindee attended the scene and extinguished the fire.

"The incident concluded at approximately 11:42pm. The supposed cause of the fire is believed to be deliberate."

Gwent Police said it had not been called to any incidents in either area last night.
