Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave reveals "the story's true protagonist" as a new time travel twist alerts Awakening fans

Eshmel in Fire Emblem Fortune's weave.

Nintendo has officially confirmed that Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave's mysterious white-haired character is the true protagonist of the story.

Since Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave was announced last September, it has been pitched as a story about four people. Those being Cai, Leda, Theodora, and Dietrich, akin to picking your house in Fire Emblem Three Houses. However, there has been an elephant in the room: a white-haired figure who appeared in trailers and on the game's box art, with both male and female versions. This was speculated to be this game's equivalent of a Robin, Corrin, or Byleth-like protagonist, and in the Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave Nintendo Direct, we finally got confirmation.

After going over the details of our four potential heroes' stories – including the somewhat massive news that you will be able to switch between the four protagonists whenever you like to play through their stories simultaneously – we were shown that five years had passed since the Heroic Games. Clearly something is amiss as the Dagdan Empire is in shambles from the rebirth of the demon god Balor, and the white-haired protagonist (whose canon name is Eshmel) will now have to scrap with them.

Nintendo doesn't try to sugarcoat it either, with the Direct narrator saying, "this is the story's true protagonist." With Eshmel, you can go take the fight to the demon right away; however, thanks to the Goddess of Fate Fortuna, Eshmel is able to travel back in time to change the fate of the four protagonists and allow them to join you in the future to prevent the end of the world.

The footage shows four altars, presumably representing different timelines where each of the four protagonists won the Heroic Games, so it seems like you won't have to replay the game multiple times to see all of their stories through, like in Three Houses.

It's a big day for Intelligent Systems fans, as today also sees the release of its canceled Virtual Boy game D-Hopper.
