Fire destroys outdoor goods store, police suspect arson

Nearby houses were evacuated as flames engulfed the store.

Police and the Tasmania Fire Service are investigating a fire that destroyed a large outdoor goods store in the state's north-west, leaving a $2.5 million damage bill.

Patrolling police alerted fire crews to the Allgoods shop blaze on Formby Road just before midnight on Friday.

Nine fire trucks were needed to stop the blaze from spreading and several crews remained on the scene for several hours.

Police believe fireworks may have been involved and have asked anyone who observed them in the area to contact police.

As flames engulfed the building, residents of nearby houses were evacuated due to fears it may spread rapidly.

Police said local residents helped get people to safety and no-one was injured.

A neighbouring store escaped significant damage and no other buildings were impacted.
